Last week I introduced Phase 1 of an amazing 2-Phase System.
This proven system allows people to start a 7-figure online business selling information products. And I know this system works because…
I have personally made over 120 million dollars on the Internet through the sale of information products.
Phase 1 of this system showed how to start an online business with ZERO product development. And even with no products, there is the potential to make as much as $10,000 per month!
The key to Phase 1 is to become an affiliate marketer. This is selling other people’s products and getting a commission on each sale, which can be as high as 50% to 70%.
And this is all done through email marketing.
My 5-Step Email Marketing System is a proven email marketing method. With it, I created an online business that earned as much as $1 Million per month!
It is this email marketing system that we will leverage in Phase 2 of this 2-Phase System.
The key to Phase 2 is selling original digital products, instead of only promoting affiliate offers. The core of the marketing will be essentially the same; email marketing. But now we transition to selling original information products as well. After successfully selling affiliate products, it’s time to expand!
To accomplish this, we harness the power of digital publishing…
How to Add Original Information Products & Scale the Business to 7-Figures!
The idea of digital publishing might seem daunting. But it really isn’t. Any passion can be turned into profits.. And there’s no need to worry about physical products or high startup costs.
I have been able to make more than $10 million per year in digital publishing. It has allowed me to live the life of my dreams and do the things I love.
What is Digital Publishing?
Digital publishing is all about selling information.
Take a passion, create content around it, package up all that information and sell it to people who benefit from it. People want to solve problems and change their lives. Success comes with providing transformative information to the right people.
Traditionally, publishing has not been easy to do. It cost a lot of money upfront to pay for infrastructure, create products and warehouse them.
Now there is another way! A much easier way.
Anyone, anywhere can build a digital publishing business thanks to the Internet. Whether creating a written product or create video or audio content, this can be done for next to nothing. Plus, there’s none of the headaches that come with inventory or shipping physical items.
Marketing is also far less expensive. The days of having to advertise in newspapers and magazines have given way to online marketing. Google and Facebook allow for highly targeted ads at reasonable costs. Free advertising is also readily available through social media, forums, and blogs.
And of course, there’s always traffic from email marketing.
Good thing we’ve already built a list in phase 1!
Advantages of Digital Publishing
There are so many advantages to digital publishing over traditional publishing.
First and foremost, it consists of original products. Yes, this requires some time and effort upfront. But once the product is created, that’s it. The hard work is done.
Since the product is original, 100% of the profits are kept.
And the business is infinitely scalable. With digital products, there is no effort needed to create more copies. Selling to 1,000 customers doesn’t cost any more time or money than selling to 10 customers.
Information is currency right now. People want to learn. People want to change their lives. People are thirsty for knowledge.
Because of this, digital publishing is growing at a massive rate. In 2015, eBook sales hit $6.74 billion just in the US!
There is tremendous opportunity here. That’s why I recommend pivoting to Phase 2…
How Phase 2 Builds Off of Phase 1
Last week was all about implementing Phase 1.
From there, it is an easy pivot from affiliate marketing to digital publishing because we’ve already built an email list. A relationship has developed with the list. Trust has been established.
So, when we bring out a product of our own, they are already warm to it.
By this point we have also been exposed to different products. We have seen what sells best and what doesn’t sell well.
Now we can capitalize on everything digital publishing has to offer, And keep all the profits. Not only that, the business can be scaled infinitely. Even the opt-in page can be scaled to offer more value to the customer by turning it into a full blog.
And I have an amazing 7-Step System to accomplish all of this…
The 7 Steps to Start a Digital Publishing Business
Do NOT create a digital product…
Didn’t expect that one, huh? Really though, don’t create a digital product… At least not yet.
It is easy to get excited, but start at the beginning. And the beginning is not product creation. It’s product development.
In fact, there is an entire strategy to follow in order to successfully launch a digital publishing business. It isn’t difficult, but it is critical to stick to. There are certain steps to follow, and we’ll get to those in a minute. But first, here’s what is NOT NECESSARY to create a digital product:
- Being an amazing writer
- Being an expert in the niche
- Being a computer expert
Yes, I am saying that it’s not necessary to be an expert to start a digital publishing business. Huge profits can be made as long as this happens—leveraging the expertise of other people.
We’ll get into the details of that soon. But now let’s dive into the actual 7 steps to create a successful digital publishing business…
- Step 1: Pick The Right Niche
- Step 2: Create A Product Customers Want
- Step 3: Profit Multiplier
- Step 4: Delivery
- Step 5: Messaging
- Step 6: Ignition
- Step 7: Grow
When reading through these 7 steps, remember one thing… Knowledge isn’t enough. Taking action is what really counts. Success doesn’t come by knowing, but by executing these 7 steps,
Step 1: Pick the Right Niche
The very first thing to do is determine who to sell to and what to sell.
Decide on who the target audience is and what they need or want. Without this firmly in place, it will be difficult to find success.
There are so many niches to choose from. Some are easier to succeed in than others. The five most successful niches include:
- Weight Loss
Choosing to start out in one of these niches increases the chances of success.
However, whether looking at these niches or others, there are a few key questions to must ask. The answers to these questions will help in deciding whether or not the niche is a good one.
- Is it digital friendly?
- Are there other digital publishers in this niche?
- How big is the audience?
- Are people searching online for information in this niche?
- Could I create and sell multiple products to this audience?
Once these questions are answered and a niche is selected, it’s time to move on to Step 2…
Step 2: Create a Product Customers Want
We are getting closer to product creation. But there is something else to do first.
Before creating a product, a little homework has to be done.
This is doing research and finding out what the target audience actually wants. Personal preference might be different than something that is actually useful to the target audience.
I have tried the product-first way. Whenever I released a product without having done my research first, it completely flopped. I put my desires ahead of my target market’s desires, which was a terrible decision.
To do this, ask these three very important questions:
- What are the customers’ biggest challenges?
- What circumstances cause the customers to seek out information in this niche?
- What changes would these customers like to see in their lives?
EVERYTHING in a digital publishing business will be shaped by the answers to these questions—from product creation to marketing strategy. And there are three great ways to get the answers to these questions…
Research Tip #1: Model Off Successful Products
Plenty of digital publishers have already found success with their products. We can use their success to our advantage.
There is no point in reinventing the wheel.
Others have already determined what every niche or target audience wants. They have invested time and money to create a product based on those wants. They have already created the sales material.
Learn from these products and this sales material. Find them and study them. Then answer the following questions:
- What challenges are they addressing?
- What benefits are they promising to deliver?
- What is the price?
- Are there upsells?
Just remember this one very important thing. NEVER copy what someone else has done. Find what works and model it, but give it a unique spin. Take it and customize it
Research Tip #2: Check Out Forums
A forum is a virtual community. It is a place where people gather online to discuss common interests and topics. Any marketing niche is going to have a forum related to it.
Find and join these forums.
This is prime ground for research. In a forum, people are talking about a specific niche. They will:
- Discuss their problems
- Ask questions
- Look for solutions
This is GOLD! These are exactly the things to know in order to create a product that will be of interest to potential customers.
Just do a Google search to find suitable forums. Type in “ selected niche” + “forum” and tons of options will appear. Reddit is also a great place to go. This mega-forum is full of sub-reddits that are full of conversations on any topic imaginable .
And don’t be afraid to get involved in the forum discussions. Just don’t act like a salesperson. Learn and share valuable information when necessary.
Research Tip #3: Always Ask
Want to find something out about someone? Just ask. Such a simple concept, yet it’s so powerful. I have learned some of my most important information from surveys I have sent to my customers.
Thanks to Phase 1, the email list is already in place. Use it! Ask social media followers questions too. Send an email or social media message out saying, “Tell me what your biggest challenges are.” Maybe offer a free gift in return, though that’s often not necessary.
People love to explain what they want. They love to express what their problems are.
Just listen to what they have to say and take action based on that. Learning about customers is NEVER a waste of time.
And now we have enough information to create a product…
A digital publishing business sells information products. This includes content and courses that are designed to provide information for customers so they can solve their biggest problems.
There are 3 types of information products:
The written product is by far the most common type of information product. This includes:
- And more
It’s not even necessary to be a good writer to create these products.
One option is to use an inexpensive transcription service, such as Rev.com, or even use the default dictation software on any computer or phone. Another option is to hire a writer to create the information product.
This really is the easiest content to create and it is highly valuable.
Audio information products are growing in popularity. They include:
- Audio Lessons
- Special Music
- Guided Meditations
- And more
And the best part is, it is EASY to create decent audio for very little money. I know that hasn’t always been the case. But these days all that’s needed is a good microphone and good software.
“Podcast microphones” can be bought right off Amazon. These come for less than $200. And Audacity is by far the best FREE audio software out there.
Great audio content can be created for pennies!
Video content has two things going for it. First, it is easy to create. Second, it has a high perceived value. And like audio, great video can be created for very little money. All that’s needed is a computer and a good microphone.
What about a video camera?
Some of the best videos out there are what we call kinetic videos. These videos show information on the screen with a narrator presenting the information. Just think of it as a recorded PowerPoint presentation.
There so many software programs for this. Two of the best are ScreenFlow and Camtasia. Just create the presentation and record while actually presenting it.
Now all that’s left is deciding the best way to present the information to customers and creating it.
TIP: Interview experts in a niche and turn those interviews into a product. That’s right, no expertise necessary– just find an expert, interview them, and package those interviews into a product!
The final piece of this step is to assemble the offer. It’s important to understand that people don’t buy products—they buy offers.
What is an offer? It is the product + bonuses.
The most successful digital marketers have mastered the art of creating offers. The bonus could be a free report, a workbook, additional software, or additional training.
Anything relevant can be offered as a bonus. Don’t be afraid to get creative..
Ideally, it’s best to include a minimum of 3 bonuses with a product. This will attract people’s attention and increase the perceived value of the product.
But there’s more . Here’s how to really make a lot of money…
Step 3: Profit Multiplier
When offering a single main product, the profit potential is limited. A customer will choose to buy it or not. If they buy it, that’s one sale but then they’re gone. If they don’t buy it, they are simply gone. Either way, without an email list, that person is gone forever.
The solution to this problem is what is called the sales funnel. The use of a funnel separates amateur marketers from the professionals. A funnel is simply a sequence of offers presented to customers.
NEVER present just one offer to customers. This is a sure fire way to lose money..
We talked about the opt-in page last week. This is a one-page website that offers a FREE gift in exchange for a person’s email address. This is how an email list is built and it is the first offer in the funnel.
This opt-in page is simple and its sole purpose is to get people to commit to getting the free gift.
When they do, their email address is added to the list. Sending emails to a list is the best way to get people to click through to a sales page. This is where the main offer is made, as well as the other offers down the funnel.
If the person doesn’t buy, they’re still on the list. Follow-up emails can be sent to these people. And I know from personal experience that these emails are effective. The MAJORITY of my sales come from follow-up emails I have sent to people who did not purchase my product the first time they went to my sales page.
If the person does buy, it doesn’t stop there…
Next, we are going to add what I call a PROFIT MULTIPLIER.
A profit multiplier is an additional offer that follows a sale. Think of it as the third offer in the funnel. When the person buys the main offer, they will be taken to a thank you page that will make them an additional offer.
This is a chance for an additional sale. This is a chance to maximize profits at no extra cost! It will also provide the opportunity to build an audience of devoted fans.
Step 4: Delivery
The delivery of the product is easy! There was a time when everyone had to know how to code to make this happen. Not anymore.
A website isn’t even mandatory to deliver a product. And neither is tracking sales.
Today, there are a number of automated solutions that will automatically deliver products to customers. And they will track sales and deny access when there are payment issues. Examples of these automated solutions include:
With just a few clicks of the mouse, products can be delivered directly into the hands of paying customers.
Step 5: Messaging
Now for the sales part of a digital publishing business. At this point, the product is ready and the sales funnel and delivery system is set up.
Now just SELL the product!
Don’t worry. There’s no need to be a master salesperson or marketer. After all, the product is something that meets the needs of customers. The copy should flow from this.
However, it does require some time and effort.. The sales message should be as powerful as possible.
There are 3 ways to sell a product:
#1: Written Sales Letter
The written sales letter is the easiest way to sell a product. In the sales letter, focus on EDUCATING. That means telling the customer what they need to solve their problem. But don’t tell them the how.
That’s what the product is for!
Here’s what’s needed to create an effective written sales letter:
- A compelling headline. If the headline doesn’t hook the reader, nothing else matters.
- Sub-headlines to guide prospects through the letter and address their greatest challenges.
- A story to connect with the customer on an emotional level.
- To focus on the benefits, rather than just the features. What will the product do for the prospect?
Written sales letters are ideal for low-ticket products, those priced under $37.
#2: Video Sales Letter
The video sales letter is really the same as a written sales letter, just in a video format. Again, this is like a narrated Power Point presentation. And again, just like in the written sales letter, do the following:
- Hook the customer by getting their attention right at the beginning.
- Speak to their challenges.
- Tell stories to connect with the customer.
- Tell them the benefits of the product and tell them what they need to do to resolve their challenges.
Video sales letters are the most effective sales method for mid-ticket products. These are the products that cost between $37 and $97.
I love webinars! This is the sales method I use for the majority of my products because I tend to sell high-ticket items that cost more than $97.
A webinar is a live presentation with customers. Webinars allow for the opportunity to teach them content that is directly related to the product. This will give the audience so much value. It will also establish credibility, trust, and reciprocity.
All of these will go a long way to making the sale.
And if someone doesn’t buy, that’s fine. They still walked away happy and are more likely to buy in the future.
There are some great services out there to run webinars, such as:
- Click Funnels
- Webinar Jam
Webinars really do work well. In fact, they work so well, that’s why I launched my weekly webinar series Success Weekly!
Step 6: Ignition
At this point, we have a product, a sales funnel, and sales content in the form of a written sales letter, video sales letter, or webinar.
But we need to get people to see this sales content.
This means growing our list and generating other forms of traffic.
There are two types of traffic:
- Free Traffic
- Paid Traffic
Free traffic isn’t really free. While it doesn’t require money, it does require a lot of time. With free traffic, it takes many hours of work and wait to see the results—but they are worth it. Paid traffic requires investing money, but comes with the benefit of immediate traffic.
The most effective approach is to generate BOTH types of traffic.
The best sources of free traffic include:
Blogs: Create a simple blog, make posts consistently. This is how to attract traffic through search engines and social media shares.
Forums: We have already talked about forums. These are communities where people talk about common interests. Join in and contribute to the conversations. Position as an expert and draw people into the sales funnel.
Social Media: Social media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram are gold. Create compelling profiles and shareable content to attract as many people as possible.
Amazon Kindle: Publishing a free or inexpensive eBook on Amazon Kindle is a great way to generate a lot of free traffic. Just promote products in the eBook.
Joint Ventures: Working with others is a great way to promote products while helping someone else. This can include trading email lists and blog posts with someone in a related niche or sub-niche.
Product Reviews: Finding someone who is respected to give a review will generate buzz for FREE. And it has the potential to generate tons of traffic.
Affiliates: Phase 1 of this system was about becoming an affiliate marketer. With an original product, affiliate marketers do all of the promotional work.. Just pay a commission on every sale and tap into massive sales boosting potential.
I highly recommend combining these free methods with paid types of traffic. The best sources of paid traffic include:
Email Media: There are email marketers with HUGE email lists that will send an email to their subscribers. It’s essentially renting someone else’s list. These are called solo ads. Solo ads can be costly, but come with the benefit of instant traffic from a reputable source.
Facebook Advertising: Facebook advertising is highly targeted and very effective. Facebook has more than a billion users, which is an IMMENSE pool of potential customers. And this is a low-cost option that is scalable.
Success comes with the right combination of these traffic generation strategies.
Step 7: Grow
Once a digital publishing business is up and running, the possibilities are endless.
From here, we can do so much more, such as:
- Develop more training to deliver to customers.
- Improve the sales funnel to free up time for family and other things that increase quality of life.
- Start coaching and consulting with people one-on-one.
- Offer publishing services to other experts in a niche.
Just commit to it!
There it is, both Phase 1 and Phase 2 of this amazing 2 Phase System to success.
Phase 1 is the starting point, selling other people products through affiliate marketing.
